Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.

The Swiss president will fly to Washington on Tuesday to “present a more attractive offer” on trade to the US government, following Donald Trump’s decision to hit the country with steep tariffs.

Karin Keller-Sutter will fly for “short notice” meetings with US officials “with a view to improving the tariff situation for Switzerland”, the government said on Tuesday.

The Swiss government has been scrambling to respond to the White House’s decision last week to impose a 39 per cent tariff on the country, one of the steepest on any US trading partner.

“The aim is to present a more attractive offer to the United States in a bid to lower the level of reciprocal tariffs for Swiss exports, taking US concerns into account,” the Swiss government said.

Switzerland’s new rate is higher than the 31 per cent announced by the US president on “liberation day” in April, and is set to come into force on August 7.

    This is a developing story
