If you don’t have it, you’re guessing, and that can lead to wasted time or getting hit with terms you weren’t expecting.”

    Getting pre-approved for an auto loan means you’ve received a conditional financing offer from a lender, like a bank or credit union. The lender usually conducts a hard credit inquiry (which can affect your credit score) to determine the terms. Then it confirms the offer via a letter you can bring to a dealership.

    On average, borrowers with super-prime credit scores (781 and above) qualified for a 5.08% annual percentage rate (APR) on a new car in the first quarter of 2025, according to Experian. Comparatively, borrowers with deep subprime credit scores (300 to 500) qualified, on average, for a 15.43% APR.  

    Check your credit to see where you stand. If your score is lackluster, consider paying down debt, disputing errors, and making payments on time to improve your credit before you apply for pre-approval.

    Get Your Information Ready

    Lenders usually require you to submit personal and financial information when applying for auto loan pre-approval. This information could include your:

    • Social Security number
    • Proof of income, like tax returns or pay stubs
    • Trade-in information (title or registration)
