The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) in the UAE has simplified the renewal and replacement process for Emirates ID cards.

As part of the second phase of the Zero Bureaucracy Programme, the authority has combined these services into a single-step procedure, aiming to save time and reduce paperwork for citizens.

Applicants now only need to submit their request and pay the applicable fees. The system automatically sets the card’s validity period based on the applicant’s age, following the same approach used for UAE passports, a WAM report said.

    Automatic validity and simplified forms

Under the new system, non-essential fields such as address details and other pre-stored data have been removed to simplify the application process. The Emirates ID template is displayed on a single page, making it easier for applicants to review their information.

Validity periods are automatically assigned as follows: citizens aged 21 and above receive a 10-year validity, while those under 21 are granted 5 years upon renewal. For replacement cards, validity corresponds to the remaining period on the existing ID, and applicants cannot alter this.

    Enhanced customer experience through technology

The ICP said these improvements reflect its commitment to eliminating bureaucracy, modernising smart services, and enhancing customer experience. The updated services are accessible via the authority’s website and mobile app, offering faster, more efficient processing of Emirates ID renewals and replacements.

Citizens are encouraged to use the digital platforms for a smoother and quicker service experience, supporting the UAE’s broader goal of leveraging technology to improve government services.
