Looking for a way to save money on your next vacation? A destination dupe may be just what you and your family are looking for.

Destination dupes are lesser-known, more affordable destinations for travel. They have all the charm and attractions of big, well-known destinations without the expensive price tags.

If this sounds appealing to you, you’re not alone. According to a study by the Bank of America Institute, 92% of travelers surveyed are open to visiting a destination dupe. Millennials in particular are game to try a destination dupe, with 62% saying they’d definitely pick a more affordable option over more popular travel destinations.

By choosing destination dupes, Viola Sender—co-founder of Away to the City, a city-focused travel blog—can increase the amount of traveling she can do each year.

“My husband and I travel about three to four months a year, and destination dupes are one of the main reasons we can afford to do that,” she said. “It’s less about the name of the city and more about the feeling it gives you—whether it’s walkable streets, good food, or a laid-back vibe. You don’t have to spend a fortune to get that same kind of experience.”

While cheaper costs are a big appeal of a destination dupe, those interested in these destinations also want to escape crowds and tourist traps, have a more relaxed vacation, and find hidden gems, according to the study.

    Key Takeaways

    • Travel is exciting, but it can be expensive. Choosing a destination dupe can save you money on your next trip.
    • A destination dupe is a lower-cost alternative to a popular and expensive travel spot like New York City or Rome.
    • In addition to keeping more money in your wallet, a destination dupe can offer a reprieve from crowds and the hustle and bustle of tourists.

7 Affordable Destination Dupes For Famous Cities

Ready to plan your next vacation? We connected with a travel expert who helped share some less expensive dupes for these popular travel destinations.

    For New York City

What can be a substitute for the city that never sleeps?

“I always recommend Chicago or Mexico City,” said Taima Ramsey, a travel expert and founder of Poor in a Private Plane. “Chicago offers skyline views, amazing food, and iconic architecture, but it is way more budget-friendly and manageable. Mexico City feels like NYC with its nonstop energy, creative scene, and incredible restaurants, but your money goes much further.”

    For London

For Americans drawn to London, there is a city much closer to home that is much less expensive.

“For London, Boston is my recommendation,” Ramsey said. “You still get the history, walkable neighborhoods, and charming academic feel. But you’ll spend less, stay central, and enjoy just as much personality.”

    For Paris

What can match the romance of Paris? Head to the American South and Savannah, Georgia.

“I love recommending Savannah. It’s romantic, walkable, full of character, and has that same mix of beauty and soul but with a Southern twist. You can wander through tree-lined streets, sip wine in cozy cafes, and everything feels effortless,” Ramsey said.

    For Rome

If you are traveling to Italy, skip the more expensive city of Rome and head to Verona.

“For Rome, I always recommend Verona. When I visited Verona, the Arena immediately reminded me of the Colosseum. The city has that same timeless charm, but it’s quieter, more affordable, and honestly, easier to fall in love with,” Ramsey said.

    For Tokyo

When visiting Asia, step away from the crowds and expense of Tokyo and visit Taipei, Taiwan, instead.

“With Tokyo and Japan in general seeing record-breaking tourist numbers right now, prices and crowds are skyrocketing,” said Sender. “Taipei gives you a similar city buzz, amazing food, and cultural depth, but it’s way more affordable and a lot less intense.”

    For Amsterdam

For an alternative to picturesque Amsterdam in the Netherlands, try Ghent in Belgium.

“If you love Amsterdam’s canals, pretty medieval streets, and walkable neighborhoods, Ghent is such a good alternative. It’s still got that mix of beauty and personality, but it feels more relaxed, less commercial, and much easier on the wallet,” Sender said.

    For San Francisco

Rather than head west to San Francisco, California, head east to Lisbon in Portugal.

“This dupe actually feels like you’re in San Francisco. It has San Francisco’s iconic street trolleys, super steep streets, and even the Golden Gate Bridge! Plus, you’ll swap (San Francisco’s) jazz clubs for fado music, glimpse Portuguese culture, and have some of the freshest seafood at prices we haven’t seen in the Bay Area in decades,” said Diana Yu, a travel expert at Just Wanderlust.

    The Bottom Line

Going on vacation to popular cities like New York and London can be pricey and crowded. If you’re looking for ways to save on your travel expenses, consider destination dupes, which can have much lower price tags, fewer crowds, and still offer opportunities to explore unique and vibrant cultures.
